After strikes at over 450 locations, in 2023 California Governor Gavin Newsom joined fast food workers at SEIU 721 Headquarters in Los Angeles and signed legislation to create the nation’s first Fast Food Council.

The Council will be a statewide council of California fast food workers, government appointees, and industry leaders that will help improve working conditions for the state’s over half a million fast food workers. The Council will ensure workers can use our lived experiences and collaborate with industry leaders and government officials to design standards to improve health safety and pay. With $20/hr as a starting point, workers will push for regular wage increases that keep pace with the rising cost of living.

The Council will convene in March and publish a schedule in the coming months. Workers have already started submitting our testimony.
