Our Rights at Work: Immigration and Labor Rights in Fast Food

Anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies in Washington, and immigration threats from employers, are spreading fear in our communities and having a chilling effect on our workplaces. California policymakers need to step up and take action to make sure fast food workers have the information
and tools we need to overcome this fear and intimidation and stand up for our rights at work.

The 2025 California Fast Food Workers Survey – published in this report alongside The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA)– sheds light on the specific ways that fear about immigration status, and lack of knowledge about our rights, are impacting us and our struggle to make improvements for over 600,000 fast food workers across California.

After over a decade of organizing, the next step California fast food workers’ struggle is to establish Know Your Rights training programs. These programs, provided free by independent organizations, will empower all fast food workers—regardless of immigration status—to know our rights and what to do if our rights are being violated. This will enable us to continue turning fear into action in our fight for safety and dignity at work.
